What Is The Difference Between Tirzepatide And Semaglutide?

In the prescription medication industry, semaglutide, when marketed for weight loss, is administered at a higher dose and called Wegovy; at a lower dose, it’s marketed for diabetes and sold as Ozempic.  Tirzepatide is sold under the brand name Mounjaro for it’s FDA approval to treat diabetes.

Tirzepatide and semaglutide are both medications currently being studied and developed for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and obesity. While they belong to the same class of drugs called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists and share some similarities, some differences between Tirzepatide and semaglutide include:

Mechanism of action: Tirzepatide is a dual glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) and GLP-1 receptor agonist. It activates both the GIP and GLP-1 receptors, which helps regulate blood sugar levels and promote weight loss. Semaglutide, on the other hand, is a selective (singular) GLP-1 receptor agonist. It primarily targets and activates the GLP-1 receptor, leading to improved glycemic control and potential weight loss.

Weight loss potential: Both tirzepatide and semaglutide have demonstrated significant potential for weight loss in clinical trials. However, tirzepatide has shown a greater weight loss effect compared to semaglutide. Studies have indicated that tirzepatide may lead to more substantial weight reduction in individuals with obesity or overweight compared to semaglutide.

What Is Tirzepatide?

Tirzepatide is a is a once-weekly injectable peptide medication that when used in conjunction with consistent healthy diet and exercise, helps guests adhere to a  reduced-calorie diet and enhances the weight loss process. The therapeutic dose program offered at Des Moines Plastic Surgery is compounded with the peptide BPC-157, which has anti-inflammatory properties.  Tirzepatide is the active ingredient that is sold under the brand name Mounjaro for it’s FDA approval to treat diabetes.

In July of 2022, a study was published describing the weight loss benefits of tirzepatide. Participants in the study lost on average over 20% of their body weight. Under the brand name, this can be expensive, unavailable, or unable to be covered by insurance. Tirzepatide the active ingredient, is compounded with vitamin B12 at a fraction of the cost and offers the same weight loss benefit.

Participants in the study lost over 20% of their body weight.

  • Participants experience improved control over food cravings and compulsion
  • Lowered their risk of cardiovascular disease (heart attack or stroke)
  • Lowered lifetime risk of osteoporosis
  • General improvement in mental health

What is Semaglutide?

Semaglutide is a medication that was used previously to improve and control blood sugar in adults suffering from type 2 diabetes, under the brand name Ozempic. Recently, the FDA has approved the medication to be used for a mixture of other health-related purposes, most commonly for weight loss and weight management.

As we mentioned above, the brand name for Semaglutide is Ozempic. While no difference in the medication and use, the brand name costs much more. In fact, the brand names can cost upwards of $1,500-2,000 per month with your insurance. Because Semaglutide was released by the FDA for weight loss approval, the generic form we office can be provided at a much lower cost.

Because there are so many medications on the market for weight loss, it’s hard to decide what’s best. That’s why the FDA stepped in and approved Semaglutide for weight loss to introduce the overwhelmingly most popular weight loss medication that has been introduced since 2014.

WHAT IS SEMAGLUTIDE?

Semaglutide brand name Wegovy® or Ozempic® was approved in 2021 by the FDA for chronic weight management in obese/overweight adults, this medication has been described as a “game-changer.”

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Semaglutide works by mimicking a hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) which targets areas of the brain that regulate appetite and food intake. In conjunction with a reduced calorie diet and increased physical activity Semaglutide helps patients create better behavioral changes to eat less and move more.

Semaglutide slows down the rate at which your stomach sends food to your large intestine. This results in slower digestion (which improves blood sugar) and a longer feeling of fullness. It also stimulates the pancreas to produce more insulin, removing sugar from the bloodstream.

Patients on Semaglutide have reported reduced appetite and a reduced craving for sweets, both of which contribute to weight loss. Patients also report that over-eating while on Semaglutide results in unpleasant side effects, which discourages poor eating habits.

Pharmacy Pricing: $900-1200 for one month supply!
